Business Operations
Semirara Mining and Power Corporation is engaged in thermal coal extraction and power production. Its common stock is listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange under the symbol "SCC".
Coal Operations
The Company’s surface open cut mining operations is based in Semirara Island in the province of Antique. Covering an area of 55 square km, Semirara Island is located 350 km south of Manila.
On 20 November 1940, President Manuel L. Quezon issued Proclamation No. 649 declaring the islands of Semirara, Sibay and Caluya in Antique as coal mining reservation.
While coal resources have been discovered at four separate sites on Semirara Island, namely Panian, Bobog, Himalian and Unong, the Company operates one mine at Panian. Operations at Unong mine ceased in 2000 after 17 years of extraction.
SMPC’s coal is classified as sub-bituminous-B, and appropriate for use in a wide range of combustion facilities.
Taking advantage of its strategic location and market position as the largest coal producer in the Philippines, SMPC’s coal is sold domestically to power plants, cement plants, paper mills, textile dying plants, canneries, food factories, a sugar mill, and a fertilizer plant.
In 2007, SMPC successfully forayed into the export market with its maiden shipment to China. Since then, it has expanded its market base to include India, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand.
Power Operations
SMPC operates two units of 300MW coal-fired power plants in Calaca, Batangas, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Sem-Calaca Power Corporation.
The Calaca units were acquired from the Philippine government in 2009, and underwent rehabilitation and retrofitting to arrest their deterioration and improve their operational efficiency.
From a rated capacity of approximately 50% in 2009, Unit 1 can now run at around 75%. Meanwhile, Unit 2 currently operates at around 90% of its capacity compared to 66% prior to rehabilitation.
The Company is committed to expanding its generating capacity to deliver additional, much-needed power to the Luzon and Visayas markets. Scheduled for completion by 2015 are two 150MW coal power plants in Calaca, Batangas. Another estimated 300MW unit is expected to come on-stream by 2017. In all, SMPC’s generating capacity is expected to increase to 1,200MW in the next few years.
